RECAP: Defense Carries Cedarburg Past Whitefish Bay

Cedarburg proved that their defensive struggles in the season opener against the speedy pass oriented Kettle Moraine offense was the fluke, and not the two consecutive shutouts against Menomonee Falls and Germantown.

The Bulldogs defense held Whitefish Bay all-conference quarterback Jimmy Sherburne in check and forced him to commit 5 turnovers (3 interceptions, 2 fumbles)in a 42-7 victory Friday night.

Cedarburg quarterback Chip Rank opened the game 4-5 for 75 yards and a 9 yard touchdown pass to Logan Lauters for a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Lauters, a 5'8" 180 pound sophomore, proceeded to run the ball 11 times for 93 yards and 2 touchdowns in the first half to propel the Bulldogs to a 21-0 lead with 9 minutes to go in the first half.

Whitefish Bay would not give up, and after getting the ball on their own 15 yard line, marched 85 yards in 6 minutes capped off by a 10 yard touchdown pass from Sherburne to Larone Spears. The Blue Dukes then executed a perfect onside kick, and took over at the Cedarburg 45 yard line with 3:09 left in the half.

The entire complexion of the game changed, however, when Whitefish Bay could not convert a 4th and 4 from the Bulldog 12 yard line. On the very next play with just 1:53 left in the half, Eric Poggenburg rambled 90 yards for the touchdown that put Cedarburg ahead 28-7 heading into halftime.

"The line was doing good. They opened up holes...our whole offense was running well" said Lauters, who finished the game with 129 yards on 14 carries, 4 rushing touchdowns and 1 receiving touchdown.

"When you know your defense is playing well you can be a little bit more flexible with the offense and do some different things", said Head Coach Brian Leair.

Cedarburg improves it's record to 2-0 in the North Shore conference and 4-0 overall, while Whitefish Bay dropped to 1-1 in the conference and 2-2 overall.
